Munchausen by Proxy (MBP), also known as Factitious Disorder by Proxy, is a label for a pattern of behavior in which caretakers deliberately exaggerate and/or fabricate and/or induce physical and/or psychological-behavioral-mental health "problems" in others. Children or adults can be victims, and MBP presents in both inpatient and outpatient settings. No longer considered rare, MBP manifests as physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, neglect - or a combination. Few professionals, regardless of discipline, have the specialized knowledge and experience necessary for involvement in suspected or confirmed MBP cases.
MBP identification, intervention, case planning, and case management - very different from other kinds of abuse/neglect - will be overviewed in this workshop. Targeted audience includes state/county child welfare agency staff, law enforcement, public and private physical and mental healthcare professionals, hospital staff, school personnel, pre- school and day care providers, emergency responders, attorneys, judges - any professional who might have reason to suspect or work with suspected or confirmed MBP cases.
